The Trans-Anatolian pipeline (TANAP) project, a natural gas pipeline from Azerbaijan to Europe, turned Turkey and Azerbaijan into the largest energy players in the region, according to Hakan Arydemir, Associate Professor of the International Relations Department of the Turkish University Dumlup?nar.

The implementation of this project, aiming to bring natural gas produced from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz-2 gas field through Georgia primarily to Turkey, but also on to Europe, will ensure the energy security of Europe, he said.

“Despite the fact that the volume of Azerbaijani gas is not sufficient for the full provision of Europe with natural gas, there is no doubt that it [Europe] is in great need of Azerbaijani gas. The demand has especially increased after the gas crisis between Russia and Ukraine,” Arydemir said.

The expert believes that TANAP is important for Turkey both in a political and economic point of view.

"TANAP will contribute to the development of the regions of Turkey," said Arydemir.

Previously, the president of the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev said that the construction of TANAP was completed by 77.3 percent.

"The first batch of natural gas via TANAP will be delivered to Turkey in the first half of 2018," Abdullayev said.

TANAP construction continues at an accelerated pace and the first batch of natural gas will be delivered via TANAP to Turkey in the first half of 2018.

The gas will be delivered to Turkey in 2018 and after completion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline's construction the gas will be delivered to Europe in early 2020.

The length of TANAP is 1,850 kilometers with an initial capacity of 16 billion cubic meters of gas. Around six billion cubic meters of this gas is meant to be delivered to Turkey, with the remaining volume to be supplied to Europe.

The project will be a central part of the Southern Gas Corridor, which will connect the giant Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan to Europe through the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP).
