Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Natig Aliyev stated that the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) Advisory Council is of vital political meaning.

“Not only is the SGC a pure economic project and enjoys great interest, but every country attaches political significance to it,” he told Azertac.

“What makes us happy is that every year the number of countries, which participate in the SGC Advisory Council, increases. This is indicative of the growing interest in Azerbaijan and the project. The number of our partners, supporters and friends increases day by day.”

Aliyev further said that the Advisory Council is a platform and Azerbaijan uses it. “The visit of the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy Robin Dunnigan to Baku shows that the White House did not change its attitude towards Azerbaijan and the SGC project,” he added.

“US ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta has repeatedly emphasized that the US will always support Azerbaijan in the SGC project because it is of pivotal significance not only to Azerbaijan, but also to Europe, to the USA and to global energy security. At the same time, the UK`s Prime Ministerial Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan Baroness Nicholson is also attending the meeting of the SGC Advisory Council. This is an important fact,” noted Aliyev.

The Southern Gas Corridor envisages transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region to Europe via Georgia and Turkey. The gas will be exported through expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

The Third Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) Advisory Council kicked off in Baku on February 23. Energy ministers from the Southern Gas Corridor member-states and representatives of a number of organizations, as well as European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union, co-chair of SGC Advisory Council Maros Sefcovic participated in the event.

The Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council held its first meeting on February 12, 2015, and the second meeting on February 29, 2016.
