Azerbaijan’s Energy Ministry and EU Working Party have discussed the issue of Central Asian countries’ joining the Southern Gas Corridor, the Ministry said on November 28.

Thus, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Energy Minister Natig Abbasov met with representatives of EU Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia and mulled the prospects of energy cooperation.

EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan Malena Mard said the Southern Gas Corridor project will further strengthen the energy relations between the EU and Azerbaijan.

She reminded that a mandate was issued to commence talks on a new EU-Azerbaijan agreement.

Mard also highlighted the significance of defining and discussing the energy issues.

Natig Abbasov, in turn, said that every signed document must secure cooperation development if the interests of the two sides are maintained.

The parties also discussed the possible impact of the Turkish Stream project on the expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor, energy cooperation with Iran, as well as energy efficiency issues.

It was also noted that Azerbaijan creates technology parks and applies seven-year tax breaks for their development. European companies were invited to participate in the process.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor project. Other sources can also join this project at a later stage.

As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of TANAP and TAP.
