Azerbaijan Railways CJSC and the German Siemens company intend to expand cooperation, Nadir Azmammadov, spokesman for Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, told Trend July 21.

The issue was on the highest agenda during the meeting between Javid Gurbanov, head of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, and William Wilson, sales and commercial director at Siemens.

"The sides discussed the prospects for further strategic cooperation and made a decision on its expansion," Azmammadov added.

Azmammadov also added that a workshop on the implementation of projects in the field of centralization and blocking systems was organized for Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.

Siemens and Azerbaijan have an experience in cooperation. The company participated in installation of fibre-optic communications system on Baku-Boyuk Kesik 600 kilometer ralway section in 2001-2003.

In the field of energy, Siemens is supporting the development and improvement of the country’s power generation, transmission and distribution network.

The biggest project of Siemens in the country is Sumgait cycle power plant located 30 kilometers northwest of Baku. The plant consists of 2 gas turbines and 1 steam turbine produced by Siemens with the capacity of 525 MW.

Recently, Siemens has won an order from the Trans Adriatic Pipeline consortium for six 15-megawatt SGT-400-driven turbo compressor trains. Each of the six gas turbine-driven compressor trains comprises an SGT-400 industrial gas turbine and a Siemens barrel-type STC-SV compressor. TAP will transport natural gas from the giant Shah Deniz II field in Azerbaijan to Europe.

Continuing declines in energy prices have given new impetus to Azerbaijan’s long-running bid to diversify its economy and develop the domestic non-oil sector. In this regard, the country is placing a particular importance on the development of transport sector.

Operating in more than 190 countries, it engaged in a wide range of services in areas such as power generation and transmission, transportation, electrical components, telecommunications systems. The company invests heavily in research and development and ranks among the largest patent holders in the world.

Being a single-source supplier and system integrator, Siemens combines all the expertise necessary for sustainable solutions in all areas of rail transportation.
