SOCAR Energy Georgia Director General Mahir Mammadov announced that Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR does not plan to increase gas tariffs for the Georgian population.

He told Trend that SOCAR and the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation have signed an agreement that covers various types of gas consumption.

"It regulates the tariff for natural gas. There are no plans to revise the agreement in the near future. With regard to commercial gas consumption, due to the devaluation of the Georgian national currency [lari], we will think about it. Nevertheless, the decision has not been taken yet," he said.

Currently, the natural gas tariff for residents of Tbilisi amounts to 0.4562 lari ($0.19) per cubic meter, while in the regions, it costs 0.4 lari (about $0.17) to 0.5 lari ($0.21) per cubic meter.

The price of natural gas for commercial customers of SOCAR Georgia Gas is 0.84 lari ($0.35) per cubic meter.

On December 26, 2008, SOCAR and the Georgian government signed an agreement on transferring the management of 30 gas distribution networks in the regions of Georgia, including Kakheti, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Shida and Kvemo Kartli, Adjara, Guria, Imereti, and Samegrelo.

The list of gas distribution facilities was then increased. Earlier, all these facilities were eliminated and seven regional gas facilities were created under the management of SOCAR.

Currently, SOCAR provides more than 80 percent of the gas consumed by Georgia, and intends to increase its share of gas supply to 82 percent.

SOCAR Georgia Gas, the subsidiary of Azerbaijan's energy giant, plans to increase the number of users in Georgia to 480,000 by late 2015.

SOCAR is involved in exploring oil and gas fields, producing, processing, and transporting oil, gas, and gas condensate, marketing petroleum and petrochemical products in domestic and international markets, and supplying natural gas to industries and the public in Azerbaijan.

Three production divisions, two oil refineries, one gas processing plant, an oil tanker fleet, a deep water platform fabrication yard, two trusts, one institution, and 22 subdivisions are operating as corporate entities under SOCAR.

SOCAR manages dozens of gas distribution networks in Georgia. It controls about 25 percent of the retail market of oil products in Georgia.
