Russia’s Federal Customs Services have offered to create with Azerbaijan a Green Corridor, said Andrey Belyaninov, head of Russia’s Federal Customs Service.

The Green Corridor would facilitate the smooth transport of agricultural products in between the two countries and thus enhance trade.

“We were in Egypt, Jordan and Turkey and there too, we suggested to create a smooth passage of agricultural products,” he said on the Federation Council on April 1.

Belyaninov said that all conditions are present for the creation of a common transport zone. He also expressed hope that the effect of the measures will be felt when the new harvest begins.

The reason behind the project is to ensure access of fruit and vegetable products to the Russian market, explained Belyaninov.

The Russian Customs delegetaion recently visited Azerbaijan and met Aydin Aliyev, Chairman of Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee.

Speaking about the cooperation, Aliyev said Russia is one of the main economic partners of Azerbaijan.

“Russia is interested in expanding its trade turnover with Azerbaijan in all directions, and we especially pay attention to supplies of perishable goods from Azerbaijan, as they are relatively inexpensive, have very high quality and are quickly delivered to the territory of the Russian Federation,” he said.

Azerbaijan ranks fifth among the trade partners of Russia among the CIS countries. Russia is the main trade partner of Azerbaijan. Since 2006 the Russian Trade Representation is operating in Baku.

The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia in 2014 stood at $1.96 billion, of which some $1.3 billion accounted for imports from Russia to Azerbaijan, while $640.3 million accounted for the exports to Russia, according to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee.

Delicious, high-quality and organic agricultural products of Azerbaijan have always enjoyed significant demand in the Russian market.

Azerbaijani products have now the opportunity to enter a larger market following recent western sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis in late 2014.

Russia decided to put an embargo on import of agricultural products and food from Poland, the U.S., EU, Canada, Australia, and Norway after the U.S. and the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis.
