Azerbaijan ups electricity export

Azerbaijan has increased electricity export by almost two times in January 2015.

The country exported 17.52 million kilowatt hours of electricity this January. This comes as in the first month of 2014, 9.6 million kilowatt hours were exported, the State Customs Committee reported.

Azerbaijan exported some $943,960 million worth of electricity in January 2015 versus $557,780 million in the same period of 2014, the committee said.

Azerenergy Company is the main producer of electricity in Azerbaijan. It has over 200 substations with a capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 kilovolt amperes, as well as eight hydro power plants and 13 thermal power plants.

Last year the country exported 588.32 million kilowatt hours of electricity in accordance with the customs declaration, compared to over 595.67 million kilowatt hours in 2013.

The capacity of electricity energy generation system of Azerbaijan has increased by 30 percent over the past five years.

At present, the figure is 7,105 megawatts, which allows the country to produce annually about 24 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. This, in turn helps Azerbaijan export annually 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.

Azerbaijan’s electro-energy power generation has increased by 30 percent over the past five years.

Electricity is the current real commodity for Azerbaijani export, on the background of the new economic and financial challenges.

Earlier, Azerbaijan revealed plans to export electricity to Afghanistan and Iraq through Iran, and an agreement was also reached on the synchronization of Azerbaijan's energy system with the systems of Russia and Iran.

As a transit country, Azerbaijan will receive dividends from the operation of electricity transmission.
