ICT revenues jump

The volume of investments made in ICT sphere by enterprises and the structural divisions of the Azerbaijan Communications and High Technologies Ministry stood at 57.2 million manats ($72.8 million) in 2014, the Ministry reports.

A total of 142 million manats ($180.9 million) was invested in the ICT sphere of the country in 2014, the report said.

The revenues volume from the ICT sector and postal service of Azerbaijan increased by over 16 percent in comparison with 2013, and stood at 1.7 billion manats ($2.16 billion) last year.

The share of ICT sector was 1.9 percent in Azerbaijan’s GDP and 3.2 percent in the non-oil GDP in 2014.

The country took significant steps to lay the foundation for information and communication development in 2014.

The important steps included establishment of the new Ministry of Communication and High Technology Ministry, implementation of the Mobile Number Portability project, financing the start-up projects, production of fiber-optic cable, as well as further development of satellite communication.

Some 33 new automatic telephone exchanges were put into operation and 54 ATX were reconstructed in the country by using the investments made by communication companies.

The work on laying a cable line with the length of over 1,238 kilometers was carried out by using the investments made in this sphere. The number of ADSL ports increased by over 85,900.

Currently, the total number of phones for every 100 people in Azerbaijan is averagely 18.65, the Ministry’s statistics show.

Some 69.01 phones account for every 100 families in the country. The penetration level of mobile communication in Azerbaijan remained unchanged at the level of 110 percent, in 2014.

The year was also marked with adoption of a state program on national strategy for ICT development, laying the foundation of High-Tech Park, deployment of high-tech products manufacturing, development of e-services. These all steps are prospecting into the further development of the sector in the near future.
