The project of Nakhchivan-Kars railway line (Turkey) will be submitted to the Azerbaijani government after a detailed research.

The news was announced by Azerbaijan's Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov on October 13.

He told the journalists that currently, Turkish specialists are working over the project on connecting the railways with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Azerbaijani experts are also involved in this process.

"This is due to the fact that much of the works will be carried out on the territory of Azerbaijan," Panahov added.

The project envisages the construction of around 13 kilometers of new railway section on the Azerbaijani territory, as well as reconstruction of 160 kilometers of railroads.

"This is a large scale project and it will be submitted to the government of the country after a detailed study," the deputy minister said.

The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an Azerbaijani exclave situated on the border of Iran with 410,000 Azerbaijani inhabitants. It has been blocked by Armenia since almost 25 years ago. Communication with Nakhchivan is possible either by air or by highway transportation via Iran.

Earlier, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways Closed Joint Stock Company Arif Asgarov said the Azerbaijani side will conduct works on the rehabilitation of the railway independently. He also said Azerbaijan may also take part in the construction process in Turkey.

The Turkish side can perform these works independently, but the possibility of participation of the Azerbaijani side in this process is not excluded.

The project also envisages the reconstruction of a road from the Iranian border to Sadarak, as well as laying additional 10 kilometers of road.

According to preliminary data, the implementation of the Nakhchivan-Kars project will cost one billion manats.
