Azerbaijan's National Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) Organizations (AEC) will open an office in Italy.

The news was announced by AEC President Mammad Musayev at a press conference held as part of the Days of Italy in Azerbaijan on October 9.

Italy is the fourth country after Turkey, Germany and Ukraine, where the AEC opens its office. The relevant agreement to open the AEC office in Italy was signed during the press conference.

Manuela Traldi, the President of the Italy-Azerbaijan Trade Institute (ITAZERCOM) will be the AEC official representative in Italy.

"Italy is one of the main economic partners of Azerbaijan, and the trade turnover between the two countries was $6.2 billion last year," Musayev said.

Musayev also noted so far Azerbaijan and Italy have signed about 20 documents in the economic field. Over 50 Italian companies are operating in Azerbaijan in various spheres, and their number is increasing year by year.

Italy and Azerbaijan enjoy strong friendly relations. Italy recognized Azerbaijan's independence in January 1991. The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in May 1992.

Being one of Azerbaijan's major partners in Europe, Italy is Azerbaijan's number one trade partner for last seven years. It is the largest importer of Azerbaijani goods. Almost a quarter of Azerbaijan's export went to Italy in January-July 2013, compared to 22 percent in the same period in 2012.

Italy and Azerbaijan successfully cooperate in the energy field as well. The selection of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) by the Shah Deniz consortium is the basis of the bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
