Car import continues to fall in Azerbaijan. The country has already cut the car import more than by one third.
In January-July, 38,338 vehicles were imported in Azerbaijan. This comes as during similar period last year, 58,258 cars were imported, the State Customs Committee reported.
The report said that 34,618 units of the total imported vehicles are ??designed for transportation of people. In January-July 2013, the figure was 52,673 units.
The fall of import is interconnected with shifting to the Euro-4 standard and the market saturation. Azerbaijan has stopped import of cars that are not corresponding to Euro-4 standard from this April.
Thus, only cars produced in the EU since 2005, in the U.S. since in 2004, in China and Japan since 2011, in Korea since 2006, and in Turkey since 2009 can be imported to the country. The new law has been implemented since April 1.
In total, Azerbaijan has imported 104,385 cars in 2013. The figure is 3,000 units more than 2012. The total volume of imported cars designed for transportation of people totaled 94,879 in 2013.
Experts project that the number of imported cars will be reduced by about 20 percent to 75,000 units in 2014.
In addition, in the reported period, 3,263 cargo cars were imported in the country against 4,486 units in January-July of 2013. In 2013, the country imported 7,823 cargo trucks.
Earlier, the Committee reported a 23 percent decrease in the car import in first five months of 2014.
Experts believe that introduction of Euro-4 standard will increase prices by four percent, however the growth may continue. The prices for relatively old cars can increase by about seven percent by late 2014. The cost of low-cost cars that were already imported to the country is expected to increase as well.
