Azerbaijan to build and revamp passanger coaches

14 February 2014 [10:14] - TODAY.AZ
Swiss company Stadler is preparing to carry out the project of a carriage building plant in Ganja (365 kilometres to the west from Baku), head of the Azerbaijani Railways CJSC press service, Nadir Azmamedov told Trend on Feb. 12.

According to Azmamedov, the carriage building plant will allow for the construction and rebuilding of passenger wagons.

Currently, due to a lack of a necessary infrastructure for rebuilding wagons in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Railways CJSC sends them abroad and in particular to Ukraine and Russia.

"Currently, the company is working on the project which will enable it to introduce the final version," Azmamedov noted.

It is expected that the construction of a new plant to be established on the basis of the wagon depot in Ganja, will start during 2014.

According to Azmamedov, a meeting between representatives of CJSC and the Swiss company when details of the cooperation will be discussed is expected in the near future.

According to Azmamedov, during the meeting, the sides will discuss details of receiving passenger wagons which will be used after the launch of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway.

In October 2014, it is planned to launch the first test wagons to the borders of Georgia with Turkey within the framework of the new rail project.

The construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is one of the main parts of the Caspian transit corridor. This rail link will be able to transport one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of loads in the first stage. In the future, the capacity of BTK will increase to three million passengers and 20 million tons of loads.

The total length of BTK is 826 kilometres. After putting the railway into operation, mutual trade between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey will increase significantly with an estimated total volume exceeding $10 billion per year.
