Construction of new port near Baku runs smoothly

07 June 2012 [12:13] - TODAY.AZ
Today, Azerbaijan is working on expansion of its marine infrastructure capabilities, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said at the 40th session of the ministerial meeting of the Organization for Cooperation of Railways (OCR).

Particularly, the work is underway to build a new commercial port, which will be completed in 2015, 60 kilometers from Baku.  The port capacity will be more than 8 million tons of cargo and more than 50 000 conventional units of large containers at the first stage.

Depending on the growth of freight, the port capacity will reach 25 million tons of cargo a year, and about 1 million large containers.

The necessity of building a new port is connected with the organization of a new railway route Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project, involving Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The work in this direction will be completed by late 2013.
