Russian newspaper: European Games – another opportunity to show Azerbaijan’s rich culture

Over 6,000 athletes from 50 European countries with various culture and religion will arrive in Baku for the First European Games to start June 12, Russian daily newspaper “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” (Independent Newspaper) said.

“The upcoming First European Games will be another opportunity for Azerbaijan, the country with multiethnic and multireligious population, to show its rich culture, diversity of traditions and tolerance of Azerbaijani people, to the world,” said the newspaper.

The newspaper wrote that Azerbaijan is a state with Azerbaijanis comprising the majority of the population, however, the country can’t be regarded as mono-ethnic. Lezgins, Avars, Talyshs, Tatars, Turks and representatives of many other nations live in this country, however, the Russian community is the largest one.

The residents of Azerbaijan, the entire world, regardless of nationality and religion, will start to watch the sports competitions in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku from June 12, according to the newspaper.

Baku 2015 is the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place on June 12-28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.

As the president of the Russian Olympic Committee, member of the International Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov said previously, Russia will be represented by 360 athletes at the European Games. He said Russian national team will participate in the competitions on all kinds of sports, except athletics.
